I am short. It’d be nice if I were taller but I was born this way. The general belief is that there are more negatives than positives with being short. I agree. Having said that, it’s not all bad.
Here are the advantages and disadvantages of being short (not an exhaustive list).
- Less opportunities: In general, I’ve been afforded less opportunities in life. I am not saying I am unlucky (I definitely have a lot to be grateful for) but when it comes to dating and earning respect from society, I have to work harder to get the same opportunities
- Less confidence: This kind of fits in with the above, but I do feel less confident when standing next to someone taller. Overtime, I’ve learned to catch this belief and challenge it to the point it doesn’t have the same effect anymore
- Enhanced motivation: A big reason I am able to stay shredded for so long is my drive and discipline. As sad as this may sound, I’ve reasoned I innately have less value to offer the world than someone blessed with better genetics and I can only equalise the competition by out working them. This thought keeps me going when times are tough.
- Enhanced appreciation: Being short has taught me to appreciate what I do have in my life (or at least appreciate things more so than I otherwise would).
I’ll conclude by saying this: of course it’s unfavourable to be drawn the short end of the straw (pun intended) but being vocal and complaining makes it worse. Life is never fair and maybe it never will be. But something is only a problem, when you make it a problem.
